Coffee and Caffeine: A Performance Catalyst

Caffeine, a primary component of coffee, has been extensively studied and shown to improve various aspects of both physical and cognitive performance.

Caffeine is frequently used by athletes in different amounts and in different forms such as drinks, gels, tablets and chewing gum. However, the most common form in which it is consumed is coffee.

Interestingly, both caffeine as a supplement or coffee can result in similar performance improvements, for detail read the following study, click here.

Since the use of coffee seems to be less controversial than the use of caffeine in the form of a supplement, this may be the preferred option for many. Many will also enjoy the natural taste and smell of coffee a lot more than that of a synthetic supplement - and coffee has more benefits to it than caffeine alone.

Caffeine for Endurance Performance

This systematic review looked at the impact of caffeine on endurance-based exercise. After examining a multitude of studies, the researchers concluded that caffeine can moderately enhance endurance performance. So, whether you're a runner, cyclist, or engage in any other endurance sport, having caffeine could potentially give you that extra push!

Coffee for Endurance Performance

This evidence based review demonstrates that caffeinated coffee can be just as effective, if not more so, than caffeine alone in enhancing endurance performance. The review also delves into the other bioactive compounds in coffee that could contribute to its ergogenic (beneficial) effects.

Caffeine for Strength and Power

This systematic review and meta-analysis found that caffeine intake enhanced both strength and power in trained individuals, emphasising its benefits beyond just endurance sports.

Caffeine for Explosive Power

A comprehensive meta analysis looked at the effects of caffeine on Wingate performance, which tests short bursts of maximum effort - often used to gauge anaerobic capacity and power. The research found that caffeine boosts performance during these high-intensity, short-duration exercises. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts keen on enhancing their explosive power, incorporating caffeine could offer a significant edge.

Caffeine and Sport Performance

This comprehensive review details the broad aspects of caffeine's beneficial effects across different exercise modalities, doses, and timing. It's a valuable resource for anyone wanting a holistic view of caffeine's role in sport.

Caffeine for Optimising Cognitive Function During Exercise

This review offers a perspective on caffeine's role in enhancing cognitive functions during prolonged endurance events, including better decision-making and strategy formation.

Caffeine for Optimising Cognitive Performance Beyond Exercise

Caffeine is known to enhance alertness, mood, and cognitive functions, vital not only for athletes but for anyone aiming for mental sharpness, read this study for more information.

With Stiir you're guaranteed a precise dose of 185mg (+/- 10mg) natural caffeine per serve.

Polyphenols for Health and Performance

Polyphenols are plant-based compounds recognised for their beneficial effects on overall health and exercise recovery. Coffee stands out as a significant dietary source of polyphenols, primarily because of their high bioavailability - with about 30% of coffee polyphenols absorbed in the bloodstream (study).

Although various foods contain polyphenols, their composition and effects can vary. Coffee's unique blend of polyphenols combines with other beneficial compounds in the beverages amplifying it's potential advantages. Whilst polyphenol supplements are sometimes used, sourcing them directly from a natural food like coffee may provide a broader spectrum of health and recovery benefits, thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chlorogenic acid, the predominant polyphenol in coffee, has gained special attention due to its wide range of potential health and recovery benefits. These include antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial eff3ets (comprehensive review, here) The polyphenol compounds in coffee may also benefit post-exercise muscle glycogen re-synthesis (study).

With Stiir, you're guaranteed a precise dose of 270mg (+/- 10mg) natural polyphenols per serve.

Coffee and Holistic Health: Beyond Exercise

Coffee isn't just about physical and cognitive performance, its consumption is also linked to long-term positive health outcomes.

Cardiovascular Benefits

Habitual consumption of 3-5 cups of coffee per day is associated with a 15% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) (studies 1,2,3,4)

Type-2 Diabetes

The systematic review found that regular coffee consumption was consistently associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. Possible mechanisms behind this association include thermogenic, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory effects, modulation of adenosine receptor signalling and microbiome content and diversity. This positive effect appears similar between both women and men and aligns with previous research findings.

Mortality

The multinational cohort study found that coffee drinking was associated with reduced all-cause and cause-specific mortality.

Overall Health Review

This umbrella review of meta-analysis found that coffee consumption was more often associated with benefit than harm for a range of health outcomes.

The studies highlighted represent a fraction of the vast research on coffee, caffeine and polyphenols related to health and performance.

While the majority of studies underscore positive outcomes associated with coffee consumption, it's crucial to recognise the broader spectrum of evidence. This includes the inherent variability in indivudla responses to coffee, caffeine and polyphenols.

Everyone's experience may differ, and while some individuals may benefit greatly, others might not observe the same effects. It's important to be informed and choose what's best for your unique needs.
